Mooring winches secure the shipboard end of mooring lines, provide for adjustment of the mooring line length and compensate for changes in draft and tide.
SAS offers various types of winches.
- Electrical winch -.A winch is a lifting mechanism which works by winding up and winding down a rope or a chain attached to the material that should be lifted. The tension within the winch and the chain provides the lifting force needed to elevate the item.
- Hydraulic winch -A hydraulic winch is powered by a hydraulic system. This means that hydraulic winches use fluid power to work which utilizes hydraulic systems and a motor pump between the generator set and the winch.
- Towing winch - A winch with a large single barrel on which the towing line is reeled. It is usually fitted with an automatic control system that allows the line to run out or heave in according to weather and load conditions while towing.
